QUALITY ASSURANCE

What is Quality Assurance?

Quality assurance is a program designed to educate youth livestock producers in order to eliminate drug residues in animal carcasses, increase producer knowledge of food safety, and foster good management practices.  The program is divided into two parts: 1) Responsible handling and administration of animal health products, and 2)  Factors affecting muscle quality (i.e. bruising, dark cutters/PSE, marbling).  The youth QA program is based on recommended national guidelines and scientific research.  The goal of the Youth QA program is to let youth producers know they are apart of the food production chain and provide them with the knowledge to make informed decisions about their management practices while completing livestock projects associated with 4-H and FFA programs.

Why is Quality Assurance important to me?

It is important that all youth livestock producers understand that they are apart of the food production chain.  Regardless of the project taken, one day their animals will end up in the hands of the consumer.  Youth must be educated to insure that the product that they produce is both safe and enjoyable for the consumer.  Practices learned through this program will prepare youth to make responsible decisions as adults, and insure continued progress in increasing food safety and quality for tomorrows consumer.

All youth producers must take responsibility for the production of a safe food product through proper animal care, handling, and management practices.  Each should assume the responsibility for the role they play in delivering a quality product to their respective markets.
